Determinants of Mobile Phone Penetration: Panel Threshold Evidence from Sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract: Despite the evolving literature on the development benefits of mobile phones, we still know very little about factors that influence their adoption. Using twenty five policy variables, we investigate determinants of mobile phone penetration in 49 Sub-Saharan African countries with data for the period 2000-2012. The empirical evidence is based on contemporary and non-contemporary OLS, Fixed effects, System GMM and Quantile regression techniques. The determinants are classified into six policy categories. They a… Show more

“…Three estimation techniques are adopted to control for various heterogeneity in the data, notably, (1) baseline ordinary least squares (OLS) with control for some common time invariant variables, (2) fixed effects (FE) to control for country-specific heterogeneity, and (3) quantile regressions (QRs) to control for initial levels of poor quality education and time invariant variables, which further account for the unobserved heterogeneity. The use of a multitude of estimation strategies to increase the robustness of the findings is consistent with recent literature (Asongu, Nwachukwu, and Aziz 2018).…”

“…The OLS and QR approaches are also tailored to account for the unobserved heterogeneity in terms of the dummy control variables. The employment of these estimation approaches for a given problem statement in order to provide more robust results is consistent with recent literature (Asongu et al 2018).…”
