Determinants of Parental Perception and Support on Youth Physical Activity

Abstract: The study examines the impact of parental perception of children's weight and parental support on children's physical activity (PA) by weight groups. Multivariate regressions of parental perception of children's weight, parental support, and children's PA were conducted using parent-reported survey data. Results show that parental support was positively associated with children's PA. The impact of parental perception on children's PA and parenting behaviors varied depending on children's actual weight status. … Show more

“…• Among potential demographic correlates of physical activity, only child age showed a reliable negative association (median r = −.13) [59,218,[221][222][223][224][225][226][227][228], suggesting that older children and youth received less support than younger children and youth. • All social-cognitive factors assessed (attitudes, perceived control) were significant correlates of parental support in the medium effect size range [229].…”

“…Research has suggested that parental beliefs about PA are directly related to child PA behaviors [3] and that the most effective PA interventions include a family component [4]. Questionnaires have been used to assess parental influence on the activity levels of their children [5]; children’s participation in organized sports, sedentary activities, and feeding behaviors [6]; psychosocial influences on children’s PA [7, 8]; and parental beliefs and attitudes about feeding and obesity [9].…”
