“…With an average annual production of 4,466,906.01 Mt and 400,704.25 Mt, respectively, of staples and other agricultural products like cassava and maize, the Eastern Region of Ghana was chosen for this study. Additionally, the region’s proximity to Accra, the national capital, strengthens its trade and marketing network (Kwapong et al , 2021; Ministry of Food and Agriculture [MoFA], 2015). As a result, the number of emerging food processing SMEs and businesses adding value to raw farm products in the area has increased (Ampadu-Ameyaw and Omari, 2015).…”

“…The farming experience of respondents was 17.37 years. The average farming experience among participants and non-participants indicates that farmers have rich experience in the cultivation of cocoa and hence could affect how they do things, take certain decisions and access information from other sources directly and indirectly (Kwapong et al, 2021). Participants' average income (GH₵ 5349.55) was higher than non-participants (GH₵ 3945.79).…”

“…In addition, families with larger households utilize some of their resources to care for their other household and children's needs. As a result, the number of resources available for expanding farm size or migrating from small to medium or largescale farming is reduced (Donkor and Owusu, 2014;Kwapong et al, 2021). Moreover, smallholder farmers often cultivate small areas since they lack access to large landholdings and live in poverty.…”

“…The narrative was similar in Ghana, where border closures and import bans highlighted how fragile and vulnerable the country's food systems have been. The country's agricultural production is characterized by a rain-fed system, with smallholder rural farmers totally reliant on farm machinery and inputs from nearby urban cities (Kwapong et al,2021). Due to the pandemic's restrictions, these machinery and agricultural inputs operators who supply rural farmers were unable to travel between communities.…”
