Determinants of sepsis knowledge: a representative survey of the elderly population in Germany

Abstract: BackgroundSepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency requiring early diagnosis and urgent treatment. Knowledge is crucial, especially in major risk groups such as the elderly. We therefore assessed sophisticated knowledge about sepsis in the German elderly population.MethodsA telephone survey was carried out with a representative sample of 701 Germans from 16 federal states and a separate cohort of 700 participants from Thuringia, all aged ≥ 60 years. Sepsis knowledge was assessed via a 10-item questionnai… Show more

“…Only a small minority of citizens were familiar with the term sepsis (34). According to a recent poll in Germany only 17% of citizens were aware that vaccination may help prevent sepsis, 23% thought that sepsis results from an allergic reaction, and the majority of respondents were of the opinion that a red stripe on the arm is the key symptom of sepsis (8). As a result of strong advocacy from the GSA and key stakeholders, on May 24, 2017, the World Health Assembly (WHA) adopted a resolution urging member states to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and management of sepsis (29).…”

“…There is a widespread misperception that CAP affects only specific subgroups of susceptible individuals: in some people, CAP may be associated with only a few clinical symptoms but in others, it may present as a fulminant systemic infection causing respiratory failure, multiple organ dysfunction, and death [26,27]. In a German study assessing knowledge of sepsis among the elderly population (≥65 years old) through a telephone survey of 1401 persons, 89% had heard the term "sepsis" before the survey, but 39% could not identify a correct definition, while 98% were familiar with the term "blood poisoning" [28]. Interestingly, 45% responded that sepsis is an intense allergic reaction, and 30% that it can be caused by MDR pathogens in hospitals.…”

“…Knowledge of early sepsis symptoms may help patients and clinicians identify the condition and initiate treatment sooner. 23,24 The present study analyzed gene expression profiles of adult and pediatric sepsis patients from public databases in order to understand early molecular changes as well as biological mechanisms. For the early diagnosis of sepsis patients, we established a least absolute shrink and selection operator (LASSO) model to develop a gene signature for predicting sepsis, which we validated using external data.…”
