Biological measures, also known as biomarkers, that reflect individual differences in the psychobiology of stress and the stress response have become increasingly popular tools for connecting emotional, behavioral, and social factors to health and well‐being in aging research. The hypothalamic‐pituitary‐adrenal (HPA) axis and the autonomic nervous system (ANS) are two of the main physiological components of the psychobiology of the stress response. Advances in technology that allows measurement of physiological stress responses noninvasively, such as in saliva, have opened windows of opportunity to study relationships between context, biology, behavior, and health. This entry highlights research on salivary analytes, specifically cortisol and alpha‐amylase, that index the activity, reactivity, and regulation of the HPA axis and the ANS, respectively.
