Determinants of World Demand for U.S. Corn Seeds: The Role of Trade Costs

Abstract: The United States is a large net exporter of corn seeds. Seed trade, including that of corn, has been expanding, but its determinants are not well understood. This paper econometrically investigates the determinants of world demand for U.S. corn seeds with a detailed analysis of trade costs impeding export flows to various markets, including costs associated with distance, tariffs, and sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) regulations. The analysis relies on a gravity-like model based on an explicit specification o… Show more

“…The PPML estimator has been widely adopted in recent agro-food studies (Jayasinghe et al, 2010;Raimondi & Olper, 2011;Xiong & Beghin, 2012, Winchester et al, 2012, Philippidis et al, 2013, Dal Bianco et al, 2016; the analysis consists of assuming an additive error in Eq.…”

“…The frequency of zero bilateral trade flow observations generally prevails for bilateral trade flow datasets at disaggregated commodity or subindustrial levels and for bilateral trade flow datasets that include several distant and small developing countries (e.g., Ghazalian et al., ; Haq et al., ; Jayasinghe, Beghin, & Moschini, ;). Zero bilateral trade flow observations occur when some country pairs simply do not trade.…”

“…Disdier, Fontagné, and Mimouni (2008) find diverse impacts of NTMs on the imports of different countries. SPS measures impose less trade costs on the US exports of corn than distance and tariffs do according to the study by Jayasinghe, Beghin, and Moschini (2010). Winchester et al (2012) also address the impeding effect of NTMs on agricultural trade by defining the heterogeneity index measuring the diverse regulations between the exporter and the importer.…”
