This study explores the molding processes by using the Multi-component-injection molding (MCM) method, in which monolithic products are molded by attaching mixed liquid-silicone-rubbers (LSRs) to polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) that has the characteristic of self-binding while burning due to Pt catalysts. It is seen that this method increases the binding force between LSR and PBT. The surfaces coated with Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), Cr, Ni, etc. have excellent peeling with plastic and such surfaces are compared with those treated with hot forging die and micro blasting without coating. When peeling tests are performed at the specified polymerization temperature and molding time after LSR molding on these surfaces of hot working die molds without coating, these surfaces show excellent peeling of molds and LSR products. In particular, they show better peeling after micro blasting than surfaces with Cr and Ni coating as well as surfaces without coating, and the peeling strength also decreases. The results of contact angle and XPS analysis indicate that the LSR binding force is enhanced as an effect of catalysts, though it is not found by SEM. According to the XPS analysis, the structures of the surfaces are close to methyl and vinyl materials that are produced while LSR molding.

The application field of thermoplastic/liquid silicone rubber (LSR) combinations is remarkably wide, ranging from household consumers to the automotive sector. For the application of these combinations, the adhesion is the deciding factor. The adhesion is not only influenced by the applied polymers, but also by a tempering step. In the case of LSR, the industry already uses tempering for improving its mechanical properties. To date, there is no profound knowledge in annealing the combinations thus making the influence on adhesion unclear. Therefore, the influence of different tempering temperatures (808C, 1008C, and 1208C) and times (1, 3, 6, and 9 h) on adhesion between the thermoplastic (PBT and PA 12) and LSR was examined. The results clearly showed that post-tempering influences the single components. In the case of PBT, postcrystallization already occurs at 808C, which is reflected for instance by increasing the degree of crystallinity by about 22%. LSR showed post-cross-linking and the release of volatile components. Analyzing the tempering impact on adhesion the peel resistance of LSR and PBT decreased around 23% at 808C. The usage of thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) is increasing, and integrated hard‐soft parts can be mass produced by two‐component injection molding (or sequential molding). A key property of such parts, the adhesion between the two materials, is the topic of this study. The hard part (the first molded component) in this study was polyamide‐12 with 0 to 50 wt% glass fibers (PA12‐GF). As the second component, two TPEs were used: a vulcanized TPE and a styrenic TPE, both modified for adhesion to polyamides. The adhesion, assessed by 90° peel tests, increased with increasing melt temperatures and TPE injection rate, while it decreased with increasing glass fiber fraction in the PA12‐GF. Based on characterization of cross‐sections and fiber distributions near the interface, we propose some hypotheses for the effect of fiber fraction on the fusion between PA12‐GF and TPE. These hypotheses involve the near‐surface properties of the PA12‐GF materials, microstructure, thermo‐mechanical properties, and thermal properties. A direct effect of increasing the glass fiber fraction, that is, a reduction in adhesion as more fibers are present at the interface, does not seem to be a major effect, since few fibers are in direct contact with the TPE for any fiber fraction.
