Determination of antidiabetic compounds from Helicteres isora fruits by oral glucose tolerance test

Abstract: The aim of this study was to analyze compounds from the methanolic extract of fruits of Helicteres isora for antidiabetic activity. Sanguinarine, berberine chloride (BC) and muscimol were found to be as major compounds in the methanolic fruits extract of H. isora. BC was isolated from the methanolic fruit extract of H. isora by using HPLC and other compounds were commercially acquired. Diabetes was induced in rats by a single dose of intraperitonial injection of streptozotocin (STZ). Sanguinarine (50 mg/kg b.w… Show more

“…Ameliorating insulin resistance is an important strategy in the development of new pharmacological treatment for type 2 diabetes. Previously Chandirasegaran et al [12] reported that BC has ameliorating and anti-diabetic activities in STZ induced diabetic rats. The present work was designed to evaluate the modulatory effects of BC on insulin signaling molecules in skeletal muscles and on the levels of lipid profile and oxidant status in STZ induced diabetic rats.…”

“…Screw tree (Helicteres isora Linn), locally called Usakneo (Timor Island) or kayu ules in Bahasa is a medicinal herb with bioactive compounds in its fruits, roots and barks [1,2,3]. Based on preclinical research, desk study reveals that screw tree (H. isora) has phytopharmacological activities related to diarrhoea curing and diabetics therapy [1,4,5]. Screw tree is native to Asia and Australia with a wide range distribution.…”

“…At the industrial level, the fruit of kayu ules is imported from India to meet the demand, to meet the need of 4.5 ton/month of kayu ules fruit by the leading local industry in Java (Cunningham et al, 2018). Kayu ules has medicinal benefit that has been identified, several active compounds are contained in the fruits, barks, and stems prominently for diabetic therapy (Chandirasegaran, Elanchezhiyan, Ghosh, & Sethupathy, 2016;Kumar, Sharma, Lemos, & Shriram, 2013). It is also an effective anticancer media from the antioxidant compounds, diarrhea (Gayathri, Srinivasan, & Saroja, 2010;Kumar et al, 2013) and antibacterial activity (Sabale et al, 2012).…”
