Four different samples of ordered mesoporous silica powders (MCM-41 and SBA-15) and amino-functionalized mesoporous silica (MCM-41-NH 2 and SBA-15-NH 2 ) were used to prepare modified glassy carbon electrodes coated with ion-exchange polymer Nafion to be used for the electrochemical detection of Cd(II). The mesoporous silica samples were characterized through transmission electron microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, and N 2 -adsorption/desorption isotherms. The electrodes were characterized by using square wave anodic stripping voltammetry. The effect of pH and of the silica type on the electrodes’ response was investigated. The influence of amino functional groups grafted on the silica surface toward Cd(II) ion detection was also examined. The detection limits determined with the new silica-modified electrodes [between 0.36 and 1.68 μM Cd(II)] are slightly higher than those reported in the literature, but they are lower than those stipulated in the European legislation [45 μM Cd(II)] and, consequently, the electrodes could be successfully used to detect Cd(II) in aqueous solutions.

Glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) have been extensively employed for the determination of trace amounts of heavy metals. Lately, modifications of GCE are currently being sought. One way of obtaining better analytical performance compared to GCE is the employment of an in situ prepared antimony-film glassy carbon electrode (SbFE). This combination is especially attractive in anodic stripping voltammetry technique which uses square wave excitation signal. This work will report on the optimization of the in situ prepared SbFE by employing different deposition potentials. Furthermore, a preliminary study using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was performed at different deposition and measured potentials in order to understand the mechanism of SbFE sensor performance.

This study describes the preparation of a novel ion-imprinted polymer (IIP) to apply preconcentration of cadmium ions in water samples of the Pontal Bay in Ilhéus, Brazil. First, cadmium ion was complexed with 2-(2-thiazolylazo)-p-cresol (TAC). Subsequently, there was the polymerization using ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and methacrylic acid monomers along with the radical azobisisobutyronitrile initiator. The mold ions were removed using 2:1 (v v-1) nitric acid. The thermal stability of the polymer was evaluated by thermogravimetry and the characterization was performed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The maximum adsorption capacity for IIP (q max = 84.75 mg g-1) could be described by the Langmuir isotherm. The variables: sample flow rate, pH and eluent (nitric acid) were optimized using Box-Behnken design with determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The enrichment factor, as well as the limits of detection and quantification (LOQ), were found to be 44, 0.14 and 0.46 μg L-1 , respectively. Selectivity was evaluated by using solutions containing Cd II , Cu II , Ni II , Pb II , Co II , SO 4 2-, and Clions. The concentration of cadmium ions in the samples varied between < LOQ to 1.25 μg L-1 .
