Abstract:A novel polymerizable surfactant (so-called surfmer) was synthesized and characterized according to its structure, surface activity and polymerization ability. Polymeric micelles (size of 6 and 130 nm) appeared in the polyreaction initiated by free radicals from VA-044. In the presence of the monomer (i.e., methyl methacrylate) microemulsion systems were formed that in turn were transformed into latex entities (size -40 nm). Additionally, an emulsion polymerization was performed with the use of n-hexadecane as an oil phase resulting in the production of nanocapsules (size in the range -165-220 nm). The shape and morphologies of the nanoobjects were confirmed using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM).

A potentiometric poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane cationic surfactant‐selective sensor based on a dodecyltrimethylammonium‐phosphotungstate ion pair as an electroactive material was suggested for the determination of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide. Membrane optimization studies revealed that the PVC membrane in the composition of 0.5 % dodecyltrimethylammonium‐phosphotungstate ion pair, 69.5 % o‐nitrophenyloctylether and 30.0 % PVC displayed the best potentiometric performance properties. The sensor exhibited a linear response to dodecyltrimethylammonium ions in the concentration range of 1.0×10−6–1.0×10−2 mol L−1 with a detection limit and sensitivity of 5.0×10−7 mol L−1 and 56.6 mV/decade, respectively. The response of the sensor to dodecyltrimethylammonium cation was quite stable, sensitive, selective and rapid (<10 s). The life span of the sensor was found to be about 3 months. The analytical applications of the sensor were successfully carried out with the developed sensor as an indicator electrode for the determination of the end‐point of dodecyltrimethylammonium ions titration and dodecyltrimethylammonium contents of synthetic water samples.

An automated simple analyzer system for the extraction of cationic surfactants as an ion-pair with disulfine blue dye is described based on the technique in-syringe magnetic stirring-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid micro-extraction.The use of chloroform as an extraction solvent denser than water required to operate the syringe pump 10 upside-down. The remaining air cushion inside the syringe allowed emptying the syringe completely and reducing the dead volume significantly compared to prior works. Since the stirring bar placed inside the syringe to obtain a closed yet size-adaptable mixing chamber remains at the same position, the former magnetic stirring bar driver was simplified. The new system configuration further enabled automated insyringe washing of the organic phase with water and barium acetate solution to minimize interferences. 15 High signal repeatability with < 5 % RSD was achieved both for extraction as well as for double organic phase washing. Only 220 µL of extraction solvent and 4 mL of sample were required for simple extraction achieving a detection limit below 30 nmol L -1 and a linear response up to 1 µmol L -1 of cetyltriamethylammonium bromide. The time of analysis was 240 s for simple extraction. Considerable reduction of interferences was achieved by extract washing requiring up to 545 s. Analyte recovery in real 20 water samples was 95.6 ± 7.0 % applying extract washing.
