In nearly all cases, the strength of low-dosage hydrate inhibitors (LDHIs) is evaluated by a comparison of the induction time. Since hydrate nucleation has a stochastic nature, measurement and correlation of the induction time are troublous and nonrepeatable. Thus, the development of new techniques to make the performance of LDHIs predictable and repeatable is necessary. This work aimed at employing the crystal growth inhibition (CGI) approach as a well-known repeatable technique to determine the complete inhibition region (CIR) of methane hydrate in the simultaneous attendance of triethylene glycol (TEG) as thermodynamic hydrate inhibitor (THI) and polyvinyl caprolactam (PVCap-7k) as LDHI. To determine the CIR, the hydrate dissociation measurements were carried out. For this purpose, two aqueous solutions of (0.46 wt % PVCap-7k + 15.00 wt % TEG), and (1.00 wt % PVCap-7k + 15.00 wt % TEG) were prepared. In the previous studies, the dissociation conditions of methane hydrate in the attendance of 0.10, 0.25, and 0.49 wt % of PVCap-7k were experimentally measured. To compare the inhibition impacts of TEG + PVCap-7k with PVCap-7k, the dissociation conditions of methane hydrate in the attendance of (1.00 wt % PVCap-7k) were also experimentally measured. Moreover, for thermodynamic modeling, a package including the van der Waals−Platteeuw (vdW-P) model for the hydrate phase, the Peng−Robinson (PR) equation of state (EoS) for the vapor-gas phase, and the Flory−Huggins (FH) model for the calculation of the water activity in an aqueous liquid phase was applied. It is concluded that the combined utilization of TEG and PVCap-7k results in a thermodynamic promotion impact on the methane hydrate. This is due to the strong thermodynamic promotion effect of PVCap that overcomes the thermodynamic inhibition impact of TEG. From the kinetic viewpoint, the combined utilization of TEG and PVCap-7k leads to a wide CIR (between 9 and 11.5 °C) which means a strong kinetic inhibition performance.

Diglycolamine (DGA) aqueous solution is a sweetening agent that can be used in the natural gas processing plants to absorb acid gases. It can also be used for partial dehydration of natural gas. Since DGA has a hydroxyl functional group, it can connect with water molecules through hydrogen bonds, lowering the water activity and acting as a thermodynamic hydrate inhibitor. This work aims to investigate the impact of DGA aqueous solution on methane hydrate dissociation conditions. In this regard, a total of 39 dissociation data of methane hydrate in the presence of four DGA aqueous solutions (3.5, 10.0, 15.0, and 20.0 wt %) were experimentally measured in the pressure range of 3.49− 8.11 MPa and temperature range of (275.3 to 283.4) K. To do so, a stainless steel (SS-316) cell was utilized, and the isochoric pressure-search method was applied to measure the hydrate dissociation conditions. It was observed that by increasing the DGA concentration in aqueous solution, the inhibition effect of DGA is increased. The average hydrate dissociation temperature suppressions for 3.5, 10.0, 15.0, and 20.0 wt % DGA in aqueous solution are 0.5, 1.4, 2.2, and 3.5 K, respectively, which are very close to the inhibition strength of triethylene glycol (TEG), diethanolamine (DEA), and methyl diethanolamine (MDEA). In the thermodynamic modeling section, the van der Waals− Platteeuw (vdW−P) model is applied for the hydrate (solid) phase to calculate the methane hydrate dissociation conditions. Three activity coefficient models are employed for the aqueous phase: NRTL, UNIQUAC, and Wilson. Also, for the vapor/gas phase, three cubic equations of state (EoSs) are taken into account, namely, the Peng−Robinson (PR EoS), the Soave−Redlich−Kwong (SRK EoS), and the Valderrama−Patel−Teja (VPT EoS). All the models benefit from no parameter optimization. Among all the thermodynamic packages, the combinations of the (vdW−P + NRTL + VPT) and (vdW−P + UNIQUAC + PR) models are the best choices, with an average absolute deviation of 0.2 K in the determination of methane hydrate dissociation temperature.

Due to the growing significance of the existence of gas hydrates in natural media like the ocean floor/permafrost regions and the extraction of natural gas from hydrate reservoirs using thermodynamic hydrate inhibitors, investigating the dissociation of gas hydrates in porous media in the presence of inhibitors is crucial. This work examines a broad range of laboratory data on the dissociation conditions of gas hydrates in the porous mediums when salt/alcohol aqueous solutions are present. The temperature of gas hydrate dissociation in the presence of pure water is calculated using the van der Waals–Platteeuw solid solution theory. The water activity in the porous medium is then calculated by taking into account a number of variables, including the radius of the porous medium, molar volume, shape factor, wetting angle, and surface tension. The Pitzer and Margules activity coefficient models are used to determine the water activity in the presence of salt and alcohol, respectively. Lastly, the gas hydrate dissociation temperature in a porous medium in the presence of salt and/or alcohol aqueous solution is determined by combining Piereon's model with an enthalpy‐based correlation that was proposed by Azimi et al. The selected package can consistently correlate the gas hydrate dissociation conditions in a porous medium in the presence of alcohol or salt aqueous solution. The average absolute deviation (AAD) of 0.67 K for the whole data bank (90 experimental data points) shows the precision of the model.
