Determination of ethanol, isopropyl alcohol and methanol in alcohol-based hand sanitiser to ensure product quality, safety and efficacy

Abstract: The Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) outbreak is an unprecedented global pandemic, sparking grave public health emergencies. One of the measures to reduce COVID-19 transmissions recommended by the World Health Organization is hand hygiene, i.e., washing hands with soap and water or disinfecting them using an alcohol-based hand sanitiser (ABHS). Unfortunately, competing ABHSs with unknown quality, safety, and efficacy thrived, posing yet another risk to consumers. This study aims to develop, optimise, and va… Show more

“…These levels of methanol were lower than the FDA-approved level of 0.63 mg/mL [44]. Methanol is a common impurity found in hand sanitizers as well as in other consumer products [36,43,45]. Isopropanol was found as a minor component in all ethanol-based hand sanitizers included in this study.…”

“…Nisbar et al employed the GC-MS technique to examine 69 ABHS samples for ethanol or isopropyl alcohol (IPA) content. Out of these samples, 14 samples contained lower alcohol content than indicated on the label, while 4 samples showed the presence of a high amount (5.3 to 19.4%) of methanol impurity (Nisbar et al, 2023).…”

“…In the future, research in the field of novel HSGs should align with the increasing demands for safety and functionality among consumers [ 129 ]. The focus of such research may revolve around two main areas: Firstly, there is a need to screen natural components that possess low toxicity and demonstrate high antimicrobial performance.…”
