Determination of Formation Constants, Solubilities, and Ionic Speciation of Uranium, Plutonium and Thorium in Aqueous and Saturated Salt Solutions for Modelling Safety Aspects of Ilw Repositories

Abstract: The solubility products of uranyl hydroxide and uranyl carbonate and the formation constants of the complexes present in the solution have been determined at 25°C and I=0.1 mol dm" 3 by potentiometry and solubility experiments. The uranyl complexes U0 2 (OH) 2 , (UO2) 2 (OH)2+, (UO2) 3 (OH) 5 +, U0 2 C0 3 , U0 2 (CO 3 ) 2 2 " and U0 2 (CO 3 ) 3 4-were identified. For the system uranyl-hydroxide the results were verified by analysis of conductance measurements. A similar investigation was carried out for thoriu… Show more

“…(1) Under the high pH of the present experimental conditions, the solid phase of Np0 2 (0H) 2 to be >10 409 . Thus, the mole fraction ratio of Np0 2 (0H) 2(s) to Np0 2 C0 3(s) can be calculated to be >10 532 by taking the solubility products of Np0 2 (0H) 2(s) (l0g K sp = -22.70 [15]) and Np0 2 C0 3(s) (log K sp = -13.29 [16]). As expected, Np0 2 (0H) 2(s) is found to dominate in the solid phase under the present conditions.…”
