Determination of Free Amino Acids in Bee Pollen by Liquid Chromatography with Fluorescence Detection

Abstract: Bee pollen is one of the hive products that is of most interest today due to its multiple beneficial health properties, making it an increasingly popular food supplement. Bee pollen contains many bioactive compounds, such as fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, proteins, and amino acids, among others. In the present study, the free amino acid content was determined in bee pollen by using liquid chromatography coupled to a fluorescence detector. Sample treatment consisted of a solvent extraction of the free amino a… Show more

“…Trueness was evaluated by the mean recoveries (as a measure of trueness) calculated by comparing the measured concentrations in spiked samples (see Section 2.2 ) and theoretical concentrations. Mean recoveries ranged from 85% to 105% (%RSD < 15%) in all cases (see results for some amino acids in Supplementary Materials, Table S1 ), which are comparable to previous works [ 5 , 17 , 24 , 26 ].…”

“…As can be seen in Table 1 and Table 2 , the values were lower in all cases when GC-MS was employed. In addition, the LOQs obtained were like those reported in previous studies [ 5 , 17 , 26 ].…”

“…Despite its composition variability BP contains all the essential amino acids (AAs) needed by the human body, as well as others used to build proteins in humans [ 47 ]. However, this does not mean that all types of pollen contain all these AAs.…”

“…Pollen grain micromorphology shows that they contain various chemicals such as exines (Abbas et al, 2022). These chemicals can be used in different ways such as delivering medicine, creating new materials, acting as templates, making carbon microspheres and helping in protein chromatography (Ares et al, 2022; Lu et al, 2014; Majeed et al, 2022). High‐performance thin‐layer liquid chromatography (HPTLC) is a chromatographic technique that has several advantages when compared with other techniques (Ristivojević et al, 2020).…”
