Determination of low‐molecular‐mass quaternary ammonium compounds by capillary electrophoresis and hyphenation with mass spectrometry

Abstract: The determination of quaternary ammonium ions by capillary electrophoresis (CE) is reviewed. The analytes include tetraalkylammonium and alkylbenzyldimethylammonium compounds frequently used as antiseptic and antibacterial agents as well as in various household products, several plant growth regulators and herbicides, by-products in bile acid sequestrants, and a range of anticholinergic drugs. Besides direct and indirect UV detection, hyphenation with electrospray mass spectrometry is particularly suited for q… Show more

“…A recent review by Buchberger and Schöftner [65] summarized the current status of CZE-MS for the analysis of several classes of quaternary ammonium compounds by CZE-MS. Analytes, such as aliphatic tetralkylammoniums, alkylbenzyldimethylammoniums, and anticholinergic ammoniums, may increase the sensitivity of these compounds by at least two orders of magnitude when compared to HPLC-MS with high efficiency. A range of ten of the eleven aliphatic carboxylic acids was separated using a polymer-coated capillary in 16 min after optimization of the CZE-MS parameters [66].…”

“…CE-MS has also found use in determination of quaternary ammonium ions [62]. The sensitivity attained was two orders of magnitude higher compared to direct and indirect UV absorbance detection.…”
