“…The bands between 2550 and 2600 cm −1 in 2-mercaptoimidazole correspond to the S−H stretching vibrations of the thiol group; such bands were markedly absent in the ZIF-8 = S compound. This can be rationalized by considering the tautomerization of thiol (R− SH) to thione (R�S), which is the favored form in 2mercaptoimidazole and similar heterocyclic compounds, 54,55 and we suspect that imidazole participation in metal coordination further stabilizes the thione form. This is supported by the location of the strong ν(C�S) stretching band at 526 cm −1 in both 2-mercaptoimidazole and ZIF-8 = S, 56 indicating that the pure ligand exists in both thiol and thione forms, while the coordinated ligand predominantly takes the thione form.…”
