“…The bands between 2550 and 2600 cm −1 in 2-mercaptoimidazole correspond to the S−H stretching vibrations of the thiol group; such bands were markedly absent in the ZIF-8 = S compound. This can be rationalized by considering the tautomerization of thiol (R− SH) to thione (R�S), which is the favored form in 2mercaptoimidazole and similar heterocyclic compounds, 54,55 and we suspect that imidazole participation in metal coordination further stabilizes the thione form. This is supported by the location of the strong ν(C�S) stretching band at 526 cm −1 in both 2-mercaptoimidazole and ZIF-8 = S, 56 indicating that the pure ligand exists in both thiol and thione forms, while the coordinated ligand predominantly takes the thione form.…”

Efficient management of radionuclides that are released from various processes in the nuclear fuel cycle is of significant importance. Among these nuclides, radioactive iodine (mainly 129I and 131I) is a major concern due to the risk it poses to the environment and to human health; thus, the development of materials that can capture and safely store radioactive iodine is crucial. Herein, a novel silver–thione-functionalized zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF) was synthesized via postsynthetic modification and assessed for its iodine uptake capabilities alongside the parent ZIF-8 and intermediate materials. A solvent-assisted ligand exchange procedure was used to replace the 2-methylimidazole linkers in ZIF-8 with 2-mercaptoimidazole, forming intermediate compound ZIF-8 = S, which was reacted with AgNO3 to yield the ZIF-8 = S–Ag+ composite for iodine uptake. Despite possessing the lowest BET surface area of the derivatives, the Ag-functionalized material demonstrated superior I2 adsorption in terms of both maximum capacity (550 g I2/mol) and rapid kinetics (50% loading achieved in 5 h, saturation in 50 h) compared to that of our pristine ZIF-8, which reached 450 g I2/mol after 150 h and 50% loading in 25 h. This improvement is attributed to the presence of the Ag+ ions, which provide a strong chemical driving force to form a stable Ag–I species. The results of this study contribute to a broader understanding of the strategies that can be employed to engineer adsorbents with robust iodine uptake behavior.

Purpose Among the most undesirable effects that lead to the restriction of doxorubicin (DOX) use in chemotherapy is kidney damage. This research aimed to assess the possible defenses against DOX-induced nephrotoxicity offered by oxyresveratrol (ORES) and/or dapagliflozin (DAPA). Methods Five groups of eight male Swiss albino rats each were created from a total of sixty-four. One intravenous injection of DOX (10 mg/kg) was given into the tail vein on the fourteenth day of the experiment; in the meantime, ORES (80 mg/kg) and DAPA (10 mg/kg) were given orally 14 days prior to the DOX injection and 2 days following the DOX injection. Results In rats given DOX, ORES and/or DAPA both successfully reduced the kidney weight, kidney/bodyweight ratio, and blood levels of creatinine, uric acid, and urea. They also increased final body weight and albumin serum levels. Additionally, lower serum concentrations of TNF-α and IL-6 were noted, along with a lower kidney content of caspase-3. Furthermore, the expression of the Bcl-2 gene was upregulated, as were the Nrf-2, PPAR-γ, and HO-1 proteins, and there was a downregulation of the ATG-5, Keap-1, and NF-κB renal gene expression. These findings support a decrease in oxidative stress and relief of histopathological alterations. Conclusion The current study’s findings suggest that ORES and/or DAPA pretreatment could be a viable therapeutic approach to ameliorate DOX-induced nephrotoxicity.
