Determination of low-molecular-weight amines and ammonium in saline waters by ion chromatography after their extraction by steam distillation

Abstract: A new method was developed for the determination of ammonium ion, monomethylamine and monoethylamine in saline waters by ion chromatography. Steam distillation was used to eliminate matrix interferences. Variables such as distillation time, concentration of sodium hydroxide solution and analyte mass were optimized by using a full two-level factorial (2(3) ) design. The influence of steam distillation on the analytical curves prepared in different matrices was also investigated. Limits of detection of 0.03, 0.0… Show more

“…The retention behavior of positional isomers of amino pentanoic acid under HILIC conditions has been investigated earlier . It was found that the elution order of these isomers of amino pentanoic acids depended on the position of the attached amino group with regard to the carboxylic group (α, β, γ, and δ).…”

“…However, this method was often not sensitive enough because there is significant adsorption of the basic amines on the often acidic column as well as decomposition of the analyte . To overcome these problems, the ion chromatography has been used for determination of primary amines . The disadvantage of ion chromatography is that not yet widely available in QC laboratories.…”

“…Due to their physical and chemical properties (e.g., lack of chromophore, high polarity, and volatility), it is very difficult to determine aliphatic amines at trace level directly from complex matrixes. Determination of aliphatic amines in water samples without derivatization is generally performed by GC , ion chromatography , and MS , combined with various preconcentration techniques. Despite being successfully applied for environmental detection of aliphatic amines, these methods are faced with another specific set of challenges when analyzing complex drug substance samples .…”

“… propose an FIA. Some researchers applied ion chromatography , however the sample has to be mightily diluted or distilled or the system was complicated . Despite the fact that the studies of nitrogen determination are particularly often and routinely performed in the laboratory, none of the above solution has found widespread application.…”
