Determination of magnesium by the solution scanometric method in a coloured titan yellow magnesium hydroxide complex form

Abstract: In this work, the magnesium content was determined by the solution scanometric method using titan yellow (TY) as a complexing agent in alkaline media. This method is based on scanning a solution containing the pink-coloured product of the combination of TY and the magnesium hydroxide complex. Hydroxylamine hydrochloride (HA) and starch were utilised as colour stabilizers and protective colloids, respectively. After the cells containing the sample solution were scanned, the colour of each cell was analysed with… Show more

“…Absorbance was measured at 248.3, 422.7, and 213.9 nm for iron, calcium, and zinc, respectively (Irungu et al, 2018). Determination of magnesium was performed using the Ethylenediamine-tetraacetic acid (EDTA) procedure previously reported by Shokrollahi et al (2016). Phosphorous was determined spectrophotometrically at 880 nm according to the AOAC (2005) method 970.39.…”

“…14,15 Several reagents in colorimetric as well as spectrophotometric methods for the determination of magnesium have been described in the literature, such as eriochrome black T (EBT), titan yellow (TY), ammonium phosphate method, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), paratolyl-2-thenohydroxamic acid and quinalizarin, 4-methyl-3-((1-H-Indol-3-iyl)(phenyl)methyl)-1-H-Indol (MPBIM), and trizma-chloranilate. [16][17][18][19][20][21] All of these procedures require a true solution of a coloured magnesium complex in which the colour intensity is directly proportional to the magnesium concentration.…”

“…As antioxidant (s) reduced the violet color of DPPH • to form the corresponding yellow color adduct, the color intensity change was quantitatively measured by color image analysis using image processing programs like Photoshop or ImageJ. In comparison, this probe-based, color image analysis technique known as scanometry has been used for detection of various analytes such as dopamine [30], magnesium ions [31], lead ions [32,33], thrombin, and mercury ions [34].…”
