Determination of manganese in herbal medicine samples by slurry-sampling electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry with a metal tube atomizer

Abstract: An ultrasonic slurry-sampling electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry with a molybdenum tube atomizer has been developed for the determination of manganese in herbal medicine samples. Ten percent glycerol solution was used as the slurry medium. The optimum pyrolysis temperature was 400 degrees C. The detection limit was 69 fg (3xS/N). Matrix element interference was checked and it was found that glycerol as a chemical modifier eliminated the interference. The amounts of manganese in herbal medicines dete… Show more

“…The two pinhole apertures (1.0 mm in diameter) were placed in front and at the rear end of the atomizer to collimate the light beam and eliminate radiation form the atomizer surface. Full details were described elsewhere [25][26][27][28][29][30] .…”

“…The highest signal was obtained by use of 7 % glycerol as slurring medium. In the slurry sampling ETAAS for the analysis of herbal medicine and vegetable samples, 25,26,[28][29][30] the optimum glycerol solution as the slurry-stabilizing agent was 10 % in water. The differences may be due to the densities of solid materials.…”

“…The analysis of trace elements in medicinal plants is typically focused on the determination of total content (Amin et al, 2002) or on the concentration of inorganic/ organic, dissolved/particulate or exchangeable/nonexchangeable trace elements (Ye and Huang, 1994;Li et al, 2000). From such information, however, the pharmacological or toxicological mechanisms of trace elements in a phytomedicine cannot be readily understood, and rational dosage criteria cannot be proposed.…”
