Determination of Mesotrione Residues and Metabolites in Crops, Soil, and Water by Liquid Chromatography with Fluorescence Detection

Abstract: A method for the determination of residues of mesotrione and two metabolites in a variety of environmental matrixes has been developed. Mesotrione, a new selective herbicide for use in corn, is 2-(4-methylsulfonyl-2-nitrobenzoyl)-1,3-cyclohexanedione. The metabolite 4-methylsulfonyl-2-nitrobenzoic acid (MNBA) is determined with the parent compound in crops, whereas two metabolites, 2-amino-4-methylsulfonyl-benzoic acid (AMBA) and MNBA are determined with parent in soil and water. Crop samples are macerated wit… Show more

“…20 The conventional methods for detecting and quantifying mesotrione are usually liquid chromatography coupled with UV spectroscopy, 24 mass spectrometry, 25 tandem mass spectrometry, 26 or°uorescence spectroscopy. 27 The high sensitivity of such methods, with detection limits at the level of nanograms per liter, 28 can be compared to the sensitivity of the cantilever described in this study, which detected target molecules at the level of nanograms per mL. A detection method based on AFM cantilever could enable analysis even when the amounts of available liquid sample are very small.…”

“…Alferness and Wiebe (2002) used liquid chromatography with Fluorescence Detection to detect the mesotrione and its metabolities in crops, soil, and water. The crop and soil extracts, and water, were cleaned up using reverse-phase HPLC with mesotrione and 4-methylsulfonyl-2-nitrobenzoic acid (MNBA) isolated using a fraction collector.…”

“…Alferness and Wiebe (2002) established a method to determine the residue of mesotrione and its metabolites in crops (included corn grain, fodder, forage and sugar cane), soil, and water by liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. Pang et al (2007) established a method to detect the residue of mesotrione in soil using high performance liquid chromatography with the ultraviolet detector (HPLC-UVD).…”

“…However, mixtures of herbicides can alter sorption as well as microbial degradation rates, which lead to alterations in the rates of leaching [6]. This behavior help explaining observations of mesotrione in surface water and groundwater [7][8][9][10].…”

“…Alferness and Wiebe [7] detected the presence of mesotrione and two metabolites (4-methylsulfonyl-2-nitrobenzoic acid-MNBA and 2-amino-4-methylsulphonylbenzoic acid-AMBA) in groundwater, surface seawater and rivers.…”
