Determination of Musty-Odor Compounds in Water by Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry with a Needle-Type Sample-Preparation Device

Abstract: The musty-odor compounds (MOCs) 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) and geosmin in water samples were determined by a purge-and-trap method using a needle-type extraction device followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. For the extraction of these compounds, a triple-layer-type extraction needle containing divinylbenzene and activated carbon particles as the particulate extraction media was introduced. Several experimental parameters, including the sample temperature during extraction, the addition of sodium ch… Show more

“…24,25 The device was also applied to the determination of VOCs in aqueous samples based on the purge-and-trap (PT) method. [26][27][28][29] PT method is suitable for the sample preparation of complex aqueous samples including non-volatile compounds, such as sugars and salts. For PT analysis with the needle device, the extraction needle was inserted into the headspace of a glass vial that included an aqueous sample, and the headspace gas was dynamically collected through the extraction needle.…”

“…Introducing a vacuum air sampling syringe, it takes about only 5 minutes to complete a typical air volume of 100 mL. Volatile organic compounds were also extracted from various aqueous matrices such as surface water and drinking water [94][95][96][97][98][99][100]. …”

“…The extraction medium can be easily optimized for target analytes, and successful extraction and desorption could be obtained for wide range of VOCs [14,15]. The extraction needle has been applied for the sample preparation of VOCs in aqueous samples based on purge and trap (PT) method [16,17]. Very volatile organic compounds (VVOCs), such as methanol and acetaldehyde, in aqueous samples were also determined by this PT method packed with carbon molecular sieve as the extraction medium [18].…”

“…In the PT extraction with the needle extraction device, the analytes included in aqueous samples were easily and rapidly extracted onto the extraction needle by active sampling of headspace gas without any expensive instruments. In addition, relatively low volatile musty odor compounds (2-methylisoborneol and geosmin) were successfully analyzed by the PT extraction method [17]. Taking into account the above successful extraction of the analytes from VVOCs to lower volatile compounds, further applicability for the simultaneous extraction and determination of wide range of analytes in aqueous samples by the PT extraction method were suggested.…”
