A new activation method for the determination of nitrogen based on 14N(p,2a)'Be and ''N(d,2an)7Be reactions is proposed. The advantages and iimttations of proton and deuteron activations are discussed. Both activation methods were applied to the determination of nitrogen in niobium and the results obtained are compared with that found by the Kjeidahl method. The detection limits achievable in this matrix, for 10 PA current and 2 h irradiation tlme, are 3 and 25 ppb for 22-MeV protons and 25-MeV deuterons, respectively.
