Determination of observations of nurses for infection control and prevention

Abstract

Aim: This research was planned as a descriptive and cross-sectional study in order to examine nurses' observations on infection control and prevention. Material and method: The research was carried out with 507 nurses working at Ankara Training and Research Hospital and voluntarily participating in the research. Ethics committee approval and institutional permissions were obtained, required for the study. Research data were collected using the descriptive characteristics form and the Nurses' Observations for Infection Control and Prevention Scale. When analyzing the data, frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Mann Whitney U Test, Kruskal Wallis Test and Spearman correlation analysis were conducted. Results: The mean age of the nurses was 30.58±7.92 and 81.9% were female and 44.4% were married. The mean score of the Nurses' Observations for Infection Control and Prevention Scale was 29.36±8.90. When the descriptive and infection control characteristics of the nurses participating in the study were examined; Single, working in the operating room, working in the day shift, stating that the number of nurses is sufficient, satisfied with the care they apply, receiving infection control training from in-service training and from congress, finding the infection control training sufficient, stating that he does not need infection control training, believing that infection can be controlled with education The scale scores of the partially believing nurses were found to be low and statistically significant (p<0,05). Conclusion: As a result of the research, it was determined that the average score of nurses regarding infection control and prevention was positive. As a result of the research, it is recommended to plan competent in-service training programs for the control and prevention of infection for nurses and to control the outputs of the trainings given. (Extended English summary is at the end of this document) Özet Amaç: Bu araştırma hemşirelerinin enfeksiyon kontrolü ve önlenmesine yönelik gözlemlerinin belirlenmesi amacıyla tanımlayıcı ve kesitsel yapılmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Araştırma, bir Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi’nde çalışan ve araştırmaya gönüllü olarak katılan 507 hemşire ile yapılmıştır. Çalışma için gerekli etik kurul onayı ve kurum izinleri alınmıştır. Araştırma verileri, tanıtıcı özellikler formu ve Hemşirelerin Enfeksiyon Kontrolü ve Önlenmesine Yönelik Gözlemleri Ölçeği kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde sayı, yüzde, ortalama, standart sapma, Mann Whitney U Testi Kruskal Wallis Testi ve spearman korelasyon analizi kullanılmıştır. Bulgular: Hemşirelerin yaş ortalaması 30,58±7,92, hemşirelikte toplam hizmet süresi (ay) ortalaması 100,95±103,97 olup %81,9’unun kadın ve %44,4’ünün evli olduğu saptanmıştır. Hemşirelerin Enfeksiyon Kontrolü ve Önlenmesine Yönelik Gözlemleri Ölçeği toplam puan ortalamasının 29,36±8,90 olduğu belirlenmiştir. Araştırmaya katılan hemşirelerin bazı tanıtıcı özelliklerine ve enfeksiyon kontrolü ile ilişkili özellikleri incelendiğinde bekar olan, ameliyathanede ve gündüz vardiyasında çalışan, hemşire sayısının yeterli olduğunu ifade eden, uyguladıkları hemşirelik bakımından memnun olan, enfeksiyon kontrolü eğitimini hizmet içi eğitimden ve kongreden alan, aldıkları enfeksiyon kontrolü eğitimini yeterli bulan, enfeksiyon kontrolü eğitimi gereksinimi olmadığını belirten, enfeksiyonun eğitim ile kontrol edilebileceğine inanan ve kısmen inanan hemşirelerin, enfeksiyon kontrolü ve önlenmesine yönelik gözlemleri ölçeği puanının daha düşük olduğu belirlenmiş olup istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark bulunmuştur (p<0,05). Sonuç: Araştırma sonucunda hemşirelere enfeksiyon kontrolü ve önlenmesine yönelik puan ortalamasının pozitif yönde olduğu belirlenmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda hemşirelere enfeksiyon kontrolü ve önlenmesine yönelik hizmet içi eğitim programlarının planlanması, ve verilen eğitimlerin çıktılarının kontrol edilmesi önerilmektedir.
