Determination of oxytetracycline residues in cattle meat marketed in the Kilosa district, Tanzania

Abstract: Oxytetracycline is used to treat various diseases in cattle. However, its use may be associated with unacceptable residue levels in food. Oxytetracycline residues in tissues from indigenous cattle were determined in a cross-sectional study conducted in the Kilosa district, Tanzania, between November 2012 and April 2013. A total of 60 tissue samples, including muscle, liver and kidney, were collected from slaughterhouses and butchers and analysed for oxytetracycline using high-performance liquid chromatography.… Show more

“…We recently identified a specific compound, oxytetracycline (OTC), as the possible underlying cause of most inflammatory pathologies both in vitro [9,10] and in vivo [11,12]. OTC belongs to the class of tetracyclines, which are the most widely and legally used antibiotics in intensive farming, for example, poultry [10], livestock [13], and aquaculture [14], due to their low cost and efficacy [15]. Unfortunately, OTC also has a high affinity for calcium-rich tissues such as bone and teeth [16] and can remain fixed for extended periods in treated animals even respecting withdrawal time [10].…”

“…In this sense, we recently identified a specific compound, oxytetracycline, as a possible agent able to trigger an inflammatory condition both in and in vivo 31,32 . Oxytetracycline belongs to the class of tetracyclines, which are the most widely and legally used antibiotics in intensive farming (e.g., poultry 30 , livestock 33 , and aquaculture 34 ) due to their low cost and high efficacy 35 . Unfortunately, oxytetracycline also has a high affinity for calcium-rich tissues, such as bone and teeth 36 , and can remain fixed in treated animals for extended periods, even respecting withdrawal time 30 .…”
