Determination of pesticides in water samples by solid phase extraction and gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry

Abstract: A multiresidue method for the determination of more than 80 pesticides in water has been developed and validated. The proposed method is based on SPE followed by GC coupled to MS/MS. Different variables affecting SPE procedure, such as cartridges, sample volume and solvents were studied, and mass spectrometric conditions were optimised in order to increase selectivity and sensitivity. Calibration curves were linear over the range of 0.03-0.5 microg/L. Recoveries were in the range of 70-110% and repeatability w… Show more

“…Therefore, contamination of matrices such as soil, water and even the agricultural products with various agrochemicals is a serious threat to human health [1,2]. Owing to properties like high stability and resistant to a wide range of pH, temperature and light, fungicides, one type of pesticides, are widely used for the protection and preservation of a variety of crops, fruits, and vegetables [3].…”

“…DCMU as well as other herbicides were previously investigated in the positive electrospray ionization mode coupled to HPLC and different mass spectrometric analyzers [22,23]. Unlike the gas phase chemistry of positive ions, very little is known in regard to negative ionic species, especially in concern to their reactivity and fragmentation behaviour.…”

“…The concentration of the pesticides in original samples is very low and a preconcentration method should be applied. Current methods to screen pesticides from environmental water matrices, require an enrichment step, usually SPE, prior to analysis by HPLC [1] or GC methods [2]. TLC is the analytical method of choice for nonvolatile and thermally labile pesticides.…”
