Determination of Phenols in Waste Waters by Ultraviolet Absorption

Abstract: A spectrophotometric method based on the shift with pH of the ultraviolet spectra of phenols has been developed for the determination of phenols in refinery waste waters.An extraction of the water sample at pH 12 with carbon tetrachloride, to remove oil, is followed by a tributyl phosphate extraction of the oil-free sample adjusted to pH 5, to recover the phenols as a concentrate.
