Determination of phytoplankton density, and study of the variation of nutrients and heavy metals in the surface water of Riva Stream; one of the water sources of Istanbul, Turkey

Abstract: A B S T R A C TIn this study, the water quality and heavy metal pollution status of Riva Stream which is related to Ö merli Dam Lake, one of the water resources of Istanbul (Turkey), was determined. For this purpose, some physicochemical parameters, phytoplankton compositions, some nutrient, and heavy metal concentrations in the surface water of Riva Stream were investigated. Samples were collected at six sampling sites in the course of the stream in February 2012 and May 2012. A total of 19 taxa, belonging to… Show more

“…During the last few decades, many studies have focused on trace element analyses and heavy metal accumulation in environment since monitoring of pollution and its effect on plant and animal species in natural habitats is vital (Sungur et al, 2013;Ozturk et al, 2017;Ghori et al, 2019;Ozturk et al, 2019;Karahan et al, 2020;Haq et al, 2021;Ozyigit, 2021;Ozyigit et al, 2022). However, studies on mineral nutrient and heavy metal accumulations in organisms living especially in aquatic ecosystems are very limited (Kaptan and Tekin-Ozan, 2014;Yilmaz et al, 2015;Yilmaz et al, 2021a,b).…”

“…Many limnological studies have been carried out on phytoplankton communities and related water quality parameters in Turkey's inland waters [11][12][13]. Studies on phytoplankton in aquaculture fish ponds, contrary to other countries, have a shortcoming in Turkey.…”

“…Species of Bacillariophya group were used as bioindicators of past lake acidification, point sources of eutrophication and total phosphorus concentration within lake sediments. It is known that species of filamentous green algae, usually dominate environments stressed by cultural eutrophication, acidification and metal contamination [6,7].…”
