Determination of Platinum‐Group Elements in OPY‐1: Comparison of Results using Different Digestion Techniques

Abstract: A new proficiency testing sample, OPY‐1 (ultramafic rock), the basis of the twentieth international proficiency test of analytical geochemistry laboratories (GeoPT 20), was recently prepared by the International Association of Geoanalysts (IAG). This paper reports analytical data for Os, Ir, Ru, Rh, Pt and Pd with different digestion techniques, including an improved Carius tube, Carius tube combined with HF dissolution and alkaline fusion. About 4–15% of the PGEs are in the silicate phase, which cannot be lea… Show more

“…The concentrations of trace elements, including those of rare earth elements (REEs), were obtained using a Perkin‐Elmer ELAN‐DRC‐e inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP‐MS) at the State Key Laboratory of Ore Deposit Geochemistry, Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, following the detailed procedures described by Liang et al () and Qi and Zhou ().…”

“…Te solution (about 2 mg/ml) and SnCl 2 solution (20%, w/v) were purified by Te-coprecipitation (Qi et al 2004). The Carius tubes and Os distillation system are same as that described by Qi and Zhou (2008). Spike solutions with enriched stable isotopes, 194 Pt, 105 Pd, 101 Ru,193 Ir,and 190 Os, were prepared from pure metals (US Services Inc., Oxbow, NJ).…”

“…Appropriate amount of enriched isotope spike solution containing 194 Pt, 105 Pd,101 Ru,193 Ir,and 190 Os was accurately added and mixed with 15-30 ml aqua regia depending on the sample mass. The sealed Carius tube was placed in a custom-made high-pressure autoclave filled with water to prevent explosion of the tube when heated to about 250°C (Qi and Zhou 2008). After 10 h, the Carius tube was cooled and the contents were transferred to a 50-ml centrifuge tube.…”

“…Pd and Pt contents were determined in the State Key Laboratory of Ore Deposit Geochemistry, Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Guiyang, using ID-ICP-MS by Carius tube digestion. Details of the analytical procedures have previously been recorded (Qi and Zhou, 2008;Qi et al, 2004Qi et al, , 2007Qi et al, , 2011. Pt and Pd data of nine hand specimen samples have been reported by Wang et al (2009).…”
