There are many methods for determining precompression stress (σ p ), whose value is affected by the slope of the soil compression curve. This study was designed to evaluate the hypothesis that for a certain compression curve all methods used to determine σ p present the same value and accuracy. The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy and the relationship among seven of these methods by computational simulation of soil compression curves under nine scenarios. The following methods were used: Casagrande, Pacheco Silva, intersection of the initial void ratio with the virgin compression line (VCLzero), and the regression methods based on 2 (reg1), 3 (reg2), 4 (reg3), and 5 (reg4) points for modeling the elastic curve. Under each scenario, created by combining the swelling and the compression indices, 1,000 compression curves were computationally simulated via the Monte Carlo method. Subsequently, 95 % percentile confidence intervals were built using the 1,000 estimates of σ p from each method under each scenario. Most of the differences among the methods were detected under scenarios consisting of high swelling and low compression indices. In general, Casagrande, Pacheco Silva, and reg4 were strongly correlated and presented the highest values of σ p , as well as similar variability. The latter two can be considered as alternatives to the standard method of Casagrande, except for Pacheco Silva when the curve has a low compression index (≤0.2) and from medium to high swelling index (≥0.025), for which differences (p<0.05) were detected.

A new method was developed to measure soil consolidation by capillary suction in organic soils. This method differs from previous methods of measuring soil consolidation in that no external load is utilized and only the forces generated via capillary suction consolidate the soil matrix. This limits the degree of consolidation that can occur, but gives a more realistic ecological perspective on the response of organic soils to desiccation in the field. This new method combines the principles behind a traditional triaxial cell (for measurements of volume change), a pressure plate apparatus, (to facilitate drainage by capillary suction), and the permeameter, (to measure saturated hydraulic conductivity) and allows for simultaneous desaturation of the soil while monitoring desiccation-induced volume change in the soil. This method also enables detection of historic limit of dryness. The historic limit of dryness is a novel concept that is unique to soils that have never experienced drying since their formation. It is fundamentally equivalent to the precompression stress of externally loaded soils. This method is particularly important for forecasting structural and hydrologic changes that may occur in soils that were formed in very wet regimes (e.g., wet meadows at the foot of persistent snowpacks and permafrost peats) as they respond to a changing climate.

Soil compaction is a serious threat to soil functions and ecosystem services. Persistent soil deformation takes place when mechanical stress exceeds soil strength. Risk assessment models typically assume soil to be elastic to a precompression stress level and plastic above this threshold. Currently used procedures for estimating soil precompression stress imply applied stress in a logarithmic form that has been criticized. We performed uniaxial, confined compression tests on 117 soil samples with a well‐defined stress history. Strain and stress were recorded at 200 levels of stress in the range of 0–1 MPa. Soil compressibility was calculated as incremental strain per incremental stress, using stress in arithmetic scale. For a given sample, a local minimum in compressibility appeared close to the preload applied to the sample prior to the compression test. This yield stress is suggested as an expression of soil precompression stress. Not all samples displayed a yield stress. Primarily soil exposed to a high preload did not exhibit a clear stress level with change in compressibility. This indicates that a physically based stress level pointing out a transition to plastic conditions will not exist for all soils. Our observation calls for new concepts in risk assessment. Tests with interpolation between a limited number of data points indicate that the yield stress—if existing—may be detected from classical compression data.
