Determination of radiative lifetimes of excited states in neutral gold using time-resolved vacuum-ultraviolet laser spectroscopy

Abstract: Natural radiative lifetimes of the states in the highly perturbed Sd' np P sequence in neutral gold, Au i, for n =6-9, as well as of four of the perturbing 5d 6s6p P states, have been measured. This was done by direct excitation from the ground state with short-pulse vacuum-ultraviolet laser light and time-resolved detection of the laser-induced fluorescence. We found the lifetimes to be +6p Pl/2) =6. 2(2) ns, &6p P3/2) =4. 7(2) ns,~7p Pl/2) =6. 4(7) ns,~7p P3/2) 5.3(7) ns,

“…The best available g f -value for the Au i line comes from Hannaford et al (1981), who obtained log g f = −0.95 ± 0.06 with lifetime and branching fraction measurements. The lifetime of Hannaford et al for the upper level agrees perfectly with that obtained by Gaarde et al (1994) using a similar technique. et al (2000) used one Pb i line, for which they had accurately derived the g f -value, to revise the solar Pb abundance.…”

“…Note that the decay times τ 1-10 µs given in Table I cannot be justified as the radiative lifetimes of the isolated Au atom levels, which are at least two orders shorter [32]. The time dynamics shown in Fig.…”

“…The natural broadening can be estimated from the radiative lifetimes of Au atomic states. For example, the radiative lifetimes of 8p and 9p states are 20-70 ns [32] and give the natural linewidth estimation of an order of 10 −3 cm −1 .…”
