The amount of thorium coprecipitated with barium sulfate at various thorium concentrations is investigated as function of sulfuric acid and potassium sulfate concentrations. There is a correlation between the mol ratio of thorium and potassium in the coprecipitate and the mol ratio of these ions in the solution. Within the limits Κ : Th = 30 and 500 in solution the mol ratio Κ : Th in BaSO" is « 2. Dissolution in steps shows that this mol ratio is approximately constant throughout the whole crystal. Anomalous mixed crystals containing Κ : Th : Ba in mol ratios « 2 : 1 : 6 are formed. The decrease in lattice parameters is in agreement with the concept that 3 Ba J + are substituted by 1 Th 4+ and 2 K + . General procedure of coprecipitationIt is known that chemical exchange between Th carrier and added tracer may be so slow that serious errors can be caused. 234 Th tracer and thorium nitrate solution were therefore boiled with a small amount of nitric acid, perchloric acid and sulfuric acid until fuming of sulfuric acid began. The solution was diluted with water to 30 ml and potassium sulfate was added. Then 2.0 ml of 0.485% barium nitrate were added drop by drop into a boiling solution [4], After cooling the solution the precipitate was filtered and washed with 20 ml of 0.5 % sulfuric acid

The use of the radioactive decay for dating purposes is reviewed. The most important dating methods are discussed. They include radioactive time markers (e.g., 137 Cs), cosmogenic radionuclides (e.g., ,4 C, "'Be), decay products of 226 Ra (e.g., 222 Rn, 210 Pb), uranium-thorium-lead chronometers, rubidium-strontium and potassium-argon nuclide pairs, applications of radioactive disequilibrium, dating with fission tracks, and thermoluminescence. Some important results, for instance the age of the Earth and the Moon, are also presented.

Trace elements play an important role in the environment, in particular in the biosphere. Some trace elements are very toxic, e. g. As, Cd, Hg, Pb; others, e. g. Fe, Zn, Mo are essential for life and found in organisms in the form of bioinorganic complexes. For many elements the difference between essential and toxic concentrations is not great. Within the last few decades the concentrations of trace elements in the environment have changed appreciably as a result of especially traffic, households and industry. The determination of trace elements in natural waters, identification of their chemical form and their separation are therefore of great importance. Chemical Forms of Trace Elements in Natural WatersTrace elements may be present in natural waters (ground water, river water, lakes and sea-water) in the form of cationic and anionic species or neutral complexes, in colloidal form or in suspended matter. The suspended solids can either be filtered off or separated by centrifuging. For filtration, membrane filters of 0.45-#m pore size are mostly used.
