Determination of soil aggregate disintegration dynamics using laser diffraction

Abstract: AB ST R ACT : A new practical and precise method for determining soil aggregate stability is described. Four air-dry aggregate fractions (<0.25, 0.25À0.5, 0.5À1.0 and 1.0À2.0 mm) were added to thoroughly stirred water in a Mastersizer 2000 laser diffractometer. The suspension obtained was passed directly through the measuring system. The dynamics of median (equivalent diameter d 50 ) particle-size distribution decrease (interpolated with a logarithmic function) was assumed to be the measure of soil aggregate s… Show more

“…The detector responses were calibrated using certified gas standards (Air Products) containing 10 mg kg -1 or 4% CH 4 in He. Particle size distribution (FAO Classification) was measured using the Mastersizer 2000 (Malvern, UK) laser diffractometer within the size range of 0.02 mm to 2 mm (Bieganowski et al, 2010). The Hydro G dispersion unit was used with 1750 r.p.m.…”

“…Emiatt a mérési eredmények alakulása nagymér-tékben függ az előkészítési módszer megválasztásától: a minták dezaggregálására és diszpergálására alkalmazott kémiai előkezelések (aggregátumokat összetartó ragasztóanyagok roncsolása, diszpergálószerek használata) alkalmazásától, a mechanikai diszpergálás intenzitásának és idejének beállításától (ARRIAGA et al, 2006;BIEGANOWSKI et al, 2010;VDOVIĆ et al, 2010;SOCHAN et al, 2012;SERBAN et al, 2015). A kémiai előkezelések során (pl.…”

“…Their primary objective is to determine the share of the mass of selected fractions of soil. These methods have been improved over many years (Bieganowski and Walczak, 2004;Gee and Bauder, 1979;Rząsa, 1978), and currently, together with the laser diffraction methods developed in recent decades (Agrawal et al, 1991;Bieganowski and Walczak, 2004;Bieganowski et al, 2010;Singer et al, 1988), are a basic research tool (ISO 11277, 1998;Rząsa and Owczarzak, 2013). The pipette method (SPM) is accepted in many countries as the official reference method for measuring the fraction of equivalent diameters less than 63 mm (Allen, 1997;ISO, 1998).…”
