Determination of Sulfur in Bioethanol Certified Reference Material

Abstract: A bioethanol certified reference material (CRM), NMIJ CRM 8301-a, has been issued by the National Metrology Institute of Japan, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (NMIJ, AIST). The raw material for this CRM is fermented bioethanol made from rice. Certified values have been provided for the contents of water, methanol, sulfur and copper. This CRM can be used for calibration and validation of water, methanol, sulfur and copper analysis in bioethanol fuel and similar matrices. This p… Show more

“…Quantication of water was carried out by using 1-butanol as an internal standard (IS) using the standard addition method. 26,30 1-Butanol was dehydrated over molecular sieves for a few days in advance. A series of water standard solutions were prepared in a glove box by gravimetric mixing of water with 1butanol.…”

“…As with fossil fuel, the sulfur content in bioethanol and biodiesel fuel is required to be 10 mg kg -1 or less by the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) 2), 3) . Therefore, a certified reference material (CRM) for bioethanol, NMIJ CRM 8301-a, has been developed and issued by the National Metrology Institute of Japan (NMIJ) 4) . On the other hand, only two biodiesel fuel CRMs for quality control, NIST SRM 2772 (Biodiesel (Soy-Based)) and NIST SRM 2773 (Biodiesel (Animal-Based)) are available 5), 6) .…”
