Determination of the flavonoid components of cashew apple (Anacardium occidentale) by LC-DAD-ESI/MS

Abstract: Liquid chromatography, with diode array detection and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (LC-DAD-ESI/MS), was used to identify and quantify flavonoids in cashew apple. One anthocyanin and thirteen glycosylated flavonols were detected in a methanol-water extract. Among them, the 3--galactoside, 3--glucoside, 3--rhamnoside, 3--xylopyranoside, 3--arabinopyranoside and 3--arabinofuranoside of quercetin and myricetin, as well as kaempferol 3--glucoside were identified by direct comparison with standards or p… Show more

“…The clarified cashew apple juice can be used to improve nutritional characteristics of mixed drinks by the supplementation of nutrients, such as vitamin C and carotenoids (ASSUNÇÃO;MERCADANTE, 2003;ABREU et al, 2009), sugars (SILVA;RABELO;RODRIGUES, 2012), flavonol glucosides (BRITO et al, 2007;MICHODJEHOUN-MESTRES et al, 2009a), anacardic acids (KUBO et al, 2006;TREVISAN et al, 2006) phenolic acids, and prodelphinidins (MICHODJEHOUN-MESTRES et al, 2009b, c). Moreover, some studies show the functional properties of the cashew apple, such as prevention of acute gastritis caused by Helicobacter pylori (KUBO; LEE; KUBO, 1999) and antioxidant activity (ABREU et al, 2009;LUZIA;JORGE, 2011).…”

“…Retention times for quercetin and kaempferol in samples were 4.834 ± 0.009 min and 7.721 ± 0.011 min, respectively. Quercetin and kaempferol showed lower retention times than those generally reported in the literature (Merken & Beecher 2000, Schieber et al 2001, Sousa de Brito et al 2007). …”
