Determination of the genera of cyst-forming coccidia

Abstract: The following heteroxenous and cyst-forming coccidian genera, Besnoitia, Cystoisospora, Frenkelia, Hammondia, Neospora, Sarcocystis and Toxoplasma have been compared biologically, and a key to determine their tissue cysts is provided.

“…Other coccidia, such as Cystoisospora felis, Cystoisospora rivolta, Besnoitia darling, Besnoitia wallacei and Sarcocystis spp. were likely to be present in these 43 specimens, since their oocyst size is similar to T. gondii and they also can infect cats (Frenkel and Smith, 2003;Dubey, 2009;Olias et al, 2011). Further investigations using species-specific primers are required before parasitic identification could be made in these specimens.…”

“…gondii is a heteroxenous and cyst-forming coccidian parasite of which there are seven genera: Besnoitia, Hammondia, Cystoisospora (Isospora), Frenkelia, Neospora, Sarcocystis and Toxoplasma (Frenkel and Smith, 2003). Infected wild and domestic felines serve as definitive hosts of T. gondii and can produce large quantities of oocysts in their feces.…”

“…The group of cystforming coccidians includes the genera Toxoplasma, Neospora, Hammonida, Besnoita, Sarcocystis and Frenkelia. Whereas specificity for a certain definitive host appears to be high in these genera, they share the ability to infect a broad range of intermediate hosts (Frenkel and Smith, 2003). Examples for non-cyst-forming coccidians are parasites of the genus Eimeria.…”

“…Neospora caninum is cyst-forming coccidian parasite that belong to the subfamily of Toxoplasmatinae (Frenkel and Smith 2003). Up to now dogs and coyotes are confirmed as definitive hosts of the parasite, although other canids are suspected to be definitive hosts of N. caninum (McAllister et al 1998;Gondim et al 2001).…”
