Determination of the stable carbon isotopic compositions of 2‐methyltetrols in ambient aerosols from the Changbai Mountains

Abstract: Isoprene is one of the most important non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) in the troposphere: it is a significant precursor of O(3) and it affects the oxidative state of the atmosphere. The diastereoisomeric 2-methyltetrols, 2-methylthreitol and 2-methylerythritol, are marker compounds of the photooxidation products of atmospheric isoprene. In order to obtain valuable information on the delta(13)C value of isoprene in the atmosphere, the stable carbon isotopic compositions of the 2-methyltetrols in ambient aeroso… Show more

“…On a global scale, the production of biogenic SOA is larger than that of anthropogenic SOA (Hallquist et al, 2009). During the past several decades, a number of investigations have been performed on biogenic SOA based on formation mechanism experiments (Yu et al, 1999;Claeys et al, 2004aClaeys et al, , 2004bClaeys et al, , 2007Edney et al, 2005;Böge et al, 2006;Kroll et al, 2006;Surratt et al, 2006Surratt et al, , 2007aSurratt et al, , 2007bSurratt et al, , 2010Minerath and Elrod, 2009;Szmigielski et al, 2010;Chan et al, 2010;Li et al, 2010;González et al, 2011;Zhang et al, 2011Zhang et al, , 2012 and field measurement campaigns. “…More recently it also has been suggested that compound specific isotope ratio measurements can be used to study the formation of secondary organic pollutants from VOC degradation in the atmosphere (Irei et al, 2006(Irei et al, , 2011Irei, 2008, Fisseha et al, 2009Li et al, 2010;Iannone et al, 2010).…”

“…That is, because isoprene has high photochemical reactivity, it is difficult to directly measure the δ 13 C of isoprene, so the δ 13 C of 2-methyltetrol is measured instead (Li et al, 2010). The average δ 13 C of 2-methyltetrol was −27.36‰ (−28.23 to −26.46‰) in four forests in Sichuan Province, China (Li et al, 2019).…”
