Determination of the standard deviation for proficiency assessment from past participant’s performances

Abstract: The ''uncertainty function'' introduced by Thompson et al. estimates the reproducibility standard deviation as a function of concentration or mass fraction. This model was successfully applied to data derived from three proficiency testing schemes aiming at the quantification of cadmium, lead and mercury in blood and urine. This model allows the estimation of standard deviation for the performance assessment for proficiency testing rounds.

“…PT/ILC are widely used for many purposes, and their use on an international scale increases yearly (1,2,(6)(7)(8)(9). In addition to the previously mentioned PT/ILC objectives related to the accreditation process, laboratories participating in PT/ILC identify problems, implement necessary corrective and preventive actions, increase trust in their actions among clients, and identify differences from other laboratories participating in these programs.…”

“…The formula has been used in method validation (11,12 ), total error estimation (13 ), and EQA schemes for analytical methods applied in the food industry and the environmental sector (10,14,15 ). So far, only 1 application in the clinical laboratory has been described (16 ). In EQA settings, the formula can be considered an alternative to the Horwitz function (3 ) with a wider applicability (1 ).…”

“…Possible statistical approaches have been further elaborated using an example of measured fat concentrations by LaBudde [7]. The practical use has been demonstrated for a number of chemical analytical parameters, for example, in water by Koch and Magnusson [8], in blood and urine by Côté et al [9], pesticide residues in olive oil by Stefanelli et al [10] and in plastics by the author of this article [11]. Jarvis et al [12] gave an example for microbiological examinations of foods.…”
