Determination of toxic and essential elements in sunflower honey from Thrace Region, Turkey

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the levels of copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni) and selenium (Se) in sunflower honeys obtained from Thrace Region of Turkey. Trace and toxic element determination was performed by atomic absorption spectrometry after microwave digestion. The accuracy of the method was checked by the standard reference material, NIST-SRM 1515 Apple leaves. The maximum contents of trace and toxic elements in honey samples … Show more

“…Other bee matrices, such as nectar/honey (Porrini et al 2003;Tuzen and Soylak 2005;Silici et al 2008;Citak et al 2012) or propolis (Serra-Bonvehí and Orantes 2013), are also used to assess heavy metal pollution. For assessments of environmental quality, binomium bees and nectar could be sufficient to obtain complementary information over the short and medium terms, respectively, and the analysis of propolis could supplement this information when nectar cannot be collected.…”

“…Kacaniova et al (2009) determined lead in honey from Slovakia. Interestingly, the cadmium concentration of Cankiri honey (1.0 AE 0.7 ng=g) was lower than the values in Turkish honey from various regions (Ç ıtak et al 2012;Ö zcan and Juhaimi 2012;Yücel and Sultanoglu 2013;Ü ren et al 1998;Tüzen et al 2007), as well as honey from Brazil (Chudzinska and Baralkiewicz 2011;Chudzinska et al 2012), Greece (Ioannidou et al 2005), and Poland (Przybylowski and Wilczynska 2001). The low concentrations of lead and cadmium are attributed to the uncontaminated nature of the province.…”

“…Lower (Tüzen et al 2007;Ç ıtak et al 2012) and higher (Yücel and Sultanoglu 2013; Yarsan et al 2007) levels were found in Anatolian honey. Whereas the concentration is affected by geographical, floral, environmental, and geological factors (Pohl et al 2012), high chromium may be from stainless steel surfaces in processing.…”
