This is the first paper reporting on results obtained in a metal bioaccumulation study in the Vaal River system. It discusses concentrations of four non-essential elements (strontium, aluminium, lead and nickel) in water, sediment and various fish tissues. A second paper will report on concentration levels of the remaining five essential trace metals (chrome, copper, iron, manganese and zinc) studied. While heavy metals did accumulate in C. gariepinus tissues, no clear trends emerged with regard to differences between localities (Vaal Dam and Vaal River Barrage) or surveys. The highest non-essential element metal concentrations were generally recorded in gill (filaments and arches), followed by muscle, liver and lastly skin. This general trend appears to be in agreement with trends observed by other workers and reported in the literature. Variability in tissue metal concentrations in C. gariepinus within locality and seasons observed in this study is also reflected in results from available literature. This accentuates the importance of factors that influence the concentrations and bioavailability of trace metals.

This investigation was aimed to evaluate water pollution with heavy metals using three biomarkers, as well as the study of the aquatic insects-seasons interaction. Three species of aquatic insects collected from El-Mansouriya stream (Dakahlia, Egypt), during the different seasons from spring 2014 to winter 2015. Water samples, sediments and whole body of the three aquatic insects were analyzed for heavy metal contents. As well as, two enzyme biomarkers, Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) were used to monitor aquatic insects' response to water pollutants. Results showed various activities of the three biomarkers at the different studied seasons. Where, the concentration of selected heavy metals, in the whole body of the three insects, showed a relatively wide range for each metal analyzed. Also, higher values of metal pollution index (MPI) were attained in hotter seasons (spring and summer) and its decrements were observable during cooler seasons (autumn, winter), that provides a representative picture to the environmental state of environmental impacts on the aquatic ecosystem. While the heavy metals were found to be highly accumulated in selected aquatic insects body, as well as the variation of enzymes activity, thus both enzymes could be used as biomarker of water and sediment contamination.

Analyses identified high levels of Cr, Hg, Ni and Pb in studied animals, which also exceeded their permissible levels in food. In sediment and soil samples, levels of Cd, Cu, Cr, Pb, Zn and As were perceived, while Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Se and As were increased in water samples. Results of transfer factor revealed that the examined animals had higher bioaccumulation rate from surrounding waters than from sediments or soils. The accomplished Health Risk Index disclosed that studied animals can have considerably high health risks for inhabitants. Conclusively, they could be considered as highly contaminated with metals and can consequently harm human health, especially children in their early development stages.
