Determination of trimethyl‐lead in rainwater and road dust by capillary GC MIP‐AE spectrometry after in situ ethylation and extraction

Abstract: A rapid and sensitive method for the determination of trimethyl-lead in water and road dust is described. It is based on in situ ethylation of ionic methyl-lead by sodium tetraethylborate and the extraction of the compound formed into hexane. The extract is gas-chromatographed and the lead species determined by microwave-induced plasma atomic emission spectrometry (MIP-AES). The reaction conditions are optimized and the method is applied to the analysis of artificial rainwater and road dust in the framework of… Show more

“…Sample Treatment. The sample treatment procedure for the determination of trimethyllead in road dust was adapted from the work of Witte et al, which was optimized for the isotope dilution technique. The recommended minimum sample intake of 1 g was weighed together with 0.3−0.4 g of a diluted stock spike solution (usually in the range of∼10 ng g -1 , but exactly determined) into a 7-mL vial with screw cap.…”

“…The European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) has started a project aiming to organise an intercomparison study on analysis of Me3Pb + and Et3Pb + species [121]. The analysis of trimethyllead and the preparation of the certificate reference materials (rainwater and urban road dust) are in progress [11,84].…”
