Determinations of Minerals in Marine Crab Charybdis lucifera (Fabricius, 1798)

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Crab meat is an excellent source of minerals, particularly calcium, iron, zinc, potassium and phosphours. The minerals in the edible parts of muscle of C.lucifera different sexes (male, female and berried female) were determined by digital flame photometer. Totally 11 minerals are reported in the present study. Seven (Sodium> Potassium >Magnesium >Calcium>Manganese> Iron >Zinc) minerals were reported in all sexes. Sodium was maximum (137.55 mg) and zinc was minimum (1.76 mg) in all sexes. Copper, mer… Show more

“…In the male, female and berried female of Charybdis lucifera (a marine crab), the mineral concentration trend was Na > K > Mg > Ca > Mn > Fe > Zn whereas Cu, Hg and Cd were in traces (but P was not determined). The total minerals concentration in the three samples under reference had this trend (mg 100g -1 on wet weight basis): male (95.5 ± 2.20) < female (121.76 ± 2.13) < berried female (156.24 ± 1.13)[45]. Fourteen minerals were determined in each of the present samples.…”

“…Ca in these samples ranged as 542 -562 mg100g -1 (17.7 -17.8%). In C. lucifera, Ca range was 11.2 ± 0.45 -22.1 ± 0.43 mg100g -1 (wet weight) [45] whereas Ca values in green tiger shrimp and speckled shrimp were 60.28 mg100g -1 and 60.44 mg100g -1 respectively [49]. About 1.9% Ca is available in the human body and provides rigidity to the skeleton and plays important role in many metabolic processes [50].…”
