Determining factors of neonatal mortality in Ethiopia: An investigation from the 2019 Ethiopia Mini Demographic and Health Survey

Abstract: Background Neonatal mortality is the probability of dying during the first 28 days of life. Of approximately 5 million children who die in the first year of life in the world, about 3 million are within their first 28 days of birth. In Ethiopia, the neonatal mortality rate is high about 37 per 1000 live births, and the factors are not well documented. Then, this study aimed to determine the key factors that have a significant influence on neonatal mortality. Methods A total of 5753 neonatal mortality-related… Show more

“…An estimated 74,837 number of neonatal deaths had occurred in Ethiopia in 2019. This is in agreement with the further analysis of mini-EDHS survey that reported 35 neonatal deaths per 1000 live births [36]. Both were done in 2019.…”

“…Neonatal mortality rate with respiratory distress syndrome is high 24.5% in Cameron (6), 10.4% in Yaoundé, Cameroon (29), 37.44% in west Oromia referral hospitals (30). Moreover, the signi cant predictors are prematurity, male gender, over birth weight, an Apgar score < 7 at the 1st minute, and early neonatal period, perinatal asphyxia, cyanosis, and delivered by caesarian section, hypertension and Diabetes mellitus, PROM, meconium aspiration (6, 9,27,30) Ethiopia ranks among the top ve countries with the highest number of neonatal deaths when RDS is the major contributor (31). Made little progress in lowering neonatal mortality, when the neonatal mortality rate is still 33/1000 by 2019 and only decreased to 27/1000 live births by 2020.…”

“…Made little progress in lowering neonatal mortality, when the neonatal mortality rate is still 33/1000 by 2019 and only decreased to 27/1000 live births by 2020. It increases neonatal care costs within the rst 28 days of life in Ethiopia (22,25,31). The government establishes strategies and policies in health sectors transformation plan that, works on the causes of neonatal mortality to prevent neonatal mortality and to give better care for neonates (22,26,32).…”
