Determining Optimal Fluorescent Agent Concentrations in Dental Adhesive Resins for Imaging the Tooth/Restoration Interface

Abstract: Fluorescent dyes like Rhodamine B (RB) have been used to identify the spatial distribution of adhesive restorative materials in the tooth/restoration interface. Potential effects of the addition of RB to dental adhesives were addressed in the past, but no further information is available on how to determine suitable concentrations of RB in these bonding agents for imaging in the confocal laser scanning microscope. This study provides systematical strategies for adding RB to viscous dental adhesive resins, focu… Show more

“…22,32,33 To distinguish the resin-dentin interface under confocal microscopy, the universal adhesive agent was incorporated with a concentration of 0.1 mg/mL of Rhodamine B dye before application on the dentin surface, as it easily penetrates into the dentin and act as a contrast agent. 25,34 Depending on the type of group, the restorative procedures were done on all the samples. Resin-dentin interface, has a thin layer of resin-reinforced dentin that binds the two different materials together on a molecular level which is often called as hybrid layer.…”

“…(20) found that rhodamine B dye can influence the physical–mechanical properties of dental adhesive resins, and Bim Júnior et al . (21) observed that the concentration of this dye influences the image labelling in confocal laser scanning microscopy. The present study used a concentration of 0.01%, thus following studies by Russel et al .…”

“…The remained 30 teeth were prepared as describe above, but the adhesive systems were labeled with rhodamine B (0.02 μg/mL for SU and 0.1 μg/mL for MP) 35 , in order to allow the analysis of the micromorphology of the adhesive interface with greater accuracy.…”
