Determining reference conditions of hemiboreal lakes in Latvia, NE Europe: a palaeolimnological approach

Abstract: The current status of a lake can be evaluated via monitoring, but such data can only provide information about the last few decades to a century at best. In most cases, the natural state of a lake cannot be ascertained. This is even more challenging if the apparent anthropogenic effects on the environment over the last millennia are considered. We used data on fossil algae from five evenly distributed hemiboreal lakes in geographically different regions in Latvia, NE Europe to assess the amount of compositiona… Show more

“…From the C/N ratio values, it is clear that OM consists of algal material. Therefore, the present‐day situation of Lake Lilaste has worsened, in comparison to so‐called reference conditions before 1200 CE, when the algal composition was different (Figure 8; Stivrins et al, 2018).…”

“…In the geological timescale, the Anthropocene ( 15 ) is currently an unofficial unit proposed to describe the new geological ongoing event/epoch ( 16 , 17 ), characterized by human altered natural processes. Human activities have left traces in the stratigraphic record during the past few millennia ( 18 , 19 ). However, qualitatively substantial changes occurred with the “great acceleration” of population growth and industrialization ( 20 , 21 ).…”
