Determining Soil Bulk Density for Carbon Stock Calculations: A Systematic Method Comparison

Abstract: Accurate and effective determination of soil bulk density (BD) is needed to monitor soil organic C (SOC) stocks and SOC stock changes. However, BD measurements are often lacking in soil inventories and BD is estimated by pedotransfer functions with substantial uncertainty. In a systematic method comparison, we evaluated different methods for BD determination in the field by comparing the performance of MINI (5 cm 3 ) and BIG (250 cm 3 ) sample rings and of three driving hammer probes differing in diameter, mat… Show more

“…However, the presented difference between calculation methods is independent of the method of determination of the these parameters with one exception: if the sampled soil layer contains no gravel, but only fine soil and rock fragments that exceed the diameter of a soil ring used to determine BD sample , and this ring is placed at a position (in the profile wall) which is completely free of rock fragments, while the rock fragment content is estimated with a different method and accounted for, then M3 does resemble M4. Bulk density is often determined with soil rings with a volume between 100 and 500 cm 2 or soil probes (Walter et al, 2016). In the German Agricultural Soil Inventory, 250 cm 2 soil rings are used to determine BD.…”

“…The soil sampler using a manually driving hammer probe may result in a potential error in determining bulk density due to compaction or stretching of the soil core [33]; nonetheless, this method is considered best practice for sampling urban soils and has been documented to present minimal site disturbance, soil excavation, and error [33]. A total of 666 soil samples were taken: 252 from roadside, 171 from park, 204 from school, and 39 from riverside UGS's (see Table 2).…”
