Determining Surface Energy of Porous Substrates by Spray Ionization

Abstract: We have developed a new spray-based method for characterizing surface energies of planar, porous substrates. Distinct spray modes (electrospray versus electrostatic-spray), from the porous substrates, occur in the presence of an applied DC potential after wetting with solvents of different surface tension. The ion current resulting from the spray process maximizes when the surface energy of the porous substrate approaches the surface tension of the wetting solvent. By monitoring selected ion current (e.g., ben… Show more

“…In contrast, no significant differences in signal intensities of the antibiotics were observed between the papers exposed to the silanization reagent for 2 and 4 h and the normal hydrophilic paper. The enhancement of signal intensity using paper with a specific exposure time (3 h) is consistent with the results reported by Damon et al (2019). They found that the signal intensity in PSI is maximized when the surface energy of the substrate matches the surface tension of the wetting solvent.…”

“…However, the Taylor cone formation is hindered at voltages lower than the onset voltage in PSI. Damon et al suggested that electrostatic spray ionization can occur on a hydrophobic paper in PSI (Damon et al, 2019). For a hydrophobic paper, capacitive charging occurs in a solvent droplet on the paper tip, inducing electrostatic force along the axis connecting the paper tip and the MS orifice.…”

“…polarity, volatility, surface tension, etc.) play a significant role in the spray process of PS 63 and many similarities are observed when compared with conventional electrospray ionization 5 . Typically, the spray solvent composition is adjusted, as well as the sample solvent (where possible), to optimize the spray conditions for the analysis at hand 64,65 .…”

“…Paper spray ionization–tandem mass spectrometry (PSI–MS/MS) for direct analysis of modified DBS enables rapid quantification of endogenous and xenobiotic compounds from whole blood samples 16 23 . The analyte solution is spotted onto a small triangular paper followed by the application of spray solvent and a high electric potential (> 3 kV), to instigate electrospray-like ionization 24 29 . Hence, this method integrates three main analytical procedures into one step: sample collection, analyte extraction, and analyte ionization, without the need for the time-consuming punching and extraction procedures of DBS.…”
