“…However, whereas the second wave was characterised by projects with relatively small sample sizes and limited statistical analysis (cf., Cook et al, 1980; Topping & Whiteley, 1993; Winter, 1988), this new generation of SPORT research represents a marked shift in study design and rigour. Recent study designs in SPORT have utilised multiple treatment groups (Brown et al, 2018; Lee & Szczerbinski, 2021; Young, Pearce, et al, 2018), random assignment (Thurston et al, 2021; Young, Pearce, et al, 2018) increased sample sizes (Downs et al, 2020; Lee & Szczerbinski, 2021; Thurston et al, 2021), RCT‐style designs (Lloyd et al, 2015; Tymms et al, 2011), and multilevel analysis (Brown et al, 2018; Downs et al, 2020; Lloyd et al, 2015; Tymms et al, 2011).
