Determining the effect of air transportation on air pollution in the most polluted city in Turkey

Abstract: Purpose This study was carried out in Igdir, where Turkey’s urban air pollution is at the highest level, and the population is among the smallest. Thus, the study aims to determine the effect of air transportation on air pollution in the most polluted city in Turkey. Design/methodology/approach The approach includes six stages: choosing the airport, accessing the flight information for the airport, classifying the aircraft that operated at the airport, determining the aircraft engines, calculating the emissi… Show more

“…In order to be successful in solving the climate crisis, at the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties, the parties should commit to not using fossil fuels gradually, thus contributing to the reduction of fuels used in the aviation industry. Countries and policymakers should take steps to stop short-haul flights wherever possible and invest in railroads, which are more convenient, greener, and more accessible (Gürçam, 2022;Gürçam and Konuralp, 2022;Gürçam et al, 2021).…”

“…Therefore, unsurprisingly, the explicit neoliberal orientation of the HTP in Turkey was infused with the thrust of privatisation. On the other hand, neoliberal structural adjustment policies aiming to "free" market mechanisms from the political domain and cope with (supposed/perceived) market failures well as crises like climate change paradoxically require state power (Gürçam, 2022;Gürçam, Konuralp and Ekici, 2021;Konuralp, 2020;Konuralp and Bicer, 2021). This paradox expresses the indispensability of the public nature of the relations of production in today's world.…”

“…ICAO performs standard measurements in measuring fuel consumption and related emissions in engine certification. The thrust levels and the duration of each phase by ICAO in the LTO cycle for the measurement of fuel consumption and pollutant emissions are given in Table 2 (Atasoy et al , 2021; Gürçam et al , 2021).…”

“…Xu et al (2020a) performed emission calculations for 10 different aircraft-engine combinations in the taxi-in and taxi-out phases of aircraft using the data obtained from the Aircraft Communication Addressing and Reporting System at Shanghai Pudong International Airport. Gürçam et al (2021) calculated the CO, NO x , HC and CO 2 emissions caused by aircraft during the LTO cycle at Igdır airport. In the study, they calculated and compared emissions for actual taxi-in and taxi-out times and times determined by ICAO.…”
