Determining the Prevalence of Osteoporosis and Related Factors using Quantitative Ultrasound in Vietnamese Adult Women

Abstract: In 2003, the authors conducted a population-based, cross-sectional survey to determine the prevalence of osteoporosis and related factors in Vietnamese adult women by using quantitative ultrasound at the heel bone (calcaneus). A total of 2,232 adult women aged > or =20 years, living in Hanoi City, and free of illnesses affecting bone metabolism were randomly selected to participate in the study. “…High osteoporosis in the age group 50–70 years was comparable to Japanese women and this was postulated to be due to pre–World War exposure and poor nutrition at that time. “…QUS studies on pre- and post-menopausal European [35, 36] and Asian women [37] have shown an increase of both SOS and BUA up to fourth decade followed by a significant decrease after 45 years. Other studies of pre-menopausal women have not consistently reflected changes in QUS with age [13].…”

“…In particular, height was positively and significantly related to BMD at the femoral neck as measured by DXA, but not at the lumbar spine [42]. Some QUS studies have shown positive associations between height and both BUA and SOS [38]; but among Asian pre-menopausal women, increased height was associated only with increased SOS and not with BUA [37]. …”

“…Osteoporosis is a public-health issue in both developed and developing countries (Hien et al, 2005;Johnell & Kanis, 2004;Miura, Saavedra, & Yamamoto, 2008;Pongchaiyakul et al, 2005). The World Health Organization (WHO) defines osteoporosis as a systemic disease that is characterized by low bone density and microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue with a consequent increase in bone fragility.…”
