Detrital Zircon Geochronology of Upper Cretaceous to Paleocene Sandstones From South‐Central Wyoming: Evidence for Middle Campanian Laramide Deformation

Abstract: Laramide deformation during the Late Cretaceous through early Eocene interrupted the east-flowing drainage systems from the Sevier hinterland and segmented the Western Interior Foreland

“…The dominant paleocurrent direction in White River Uplift was southwestward from 80.7 Ma to 80.2 Ma (Li & Aschoff, 2022b). The presence of 1,800–1,600 Ma zircons in the Santonian Mancos Shale of the Piceance Creek Basin offers evidence for the onset of nearby uplift (Lynds & Xie, 2019).…”

“…During the late Campanian to Paleogene (starting at ca. 75 Ma), deformation within the CFB became dominantly thick‐skinned (i.e., Laramide orogeny), and the CFB became locally segmented by intraforeland Laramide‐style basement‐cored uplifts (Bartschi et al, 2018; Dickinson et al, 1988; Lawton, 2008; Lynds & Xie, 2019; Yonkee & Weil, 2015) (Figure 1). These Laramide‐style uplifts can cause flexure in adjacent areas and likely would locally interfere with the flexural subsidence caused by loading of the Sevier fold‐thrust belt and mantle‐induced dynamic subsidence (Aschoff & Steel, 2011; Heller & Liu, 2016; Li & Aschoff, 2022a; Saylor et al, 2020).…”

“…For a similar reason, the local west–east trended area of minor tectonic subsidence south of the Uinta uplift (Figure 6a,b) could be attributed to the early stage of the Uinta uplift, consistent with the timing of the Uinta uplift (ca. 75 Ma) indicated by detrital zircon provenance data (Bartschi et al, 2018; Lynds & Xie, 2019).…”

“…The Laramide-age Rock Springs uplift began to form around 79 Ma (Lynds and Xie, 2019). The center of the uplift is cored by the older Baxter and Blair Formations (Schultz, 1920) and the Rock Springs Formation is present around this anticlinal structure in beds that dip away from the center of the uplift (Yourston, 1955) (figure 1).…”

“…While it is clear that a foreland basin was present, the basin was likely subdivided or broken by Laramide deformation, which complicates the standard foreland basin model (DeCelles, 2004;Rudolph and others, 2015). Laramide deformation probably began after deposition of the Rock Springs Formation (as early as 79 Ma; Gosar and Hopkins, 1969;Lynds and Xie, 2019), but a pre-Laramide deformational history may have had a local positive effect on subsidence (Hagen and others, 1985).…”
